Our Approach to Radon Mitigation

What to Expect from Radon Testing

Idaho Radon offers prompt scheduling, allowing you to set a radon testing appointment quickly and conveniently. Here, we will install a continuous radon detector. We will then plan a follow-up visit to go over the findings. There, the specialist will print the radon test results.

What to Do If Your Home Has High Radon Levels

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends radon reduction services if levels exceed 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). If there are high concentrations of radon gas in your home, we will develop a radon mitigation system tailored to your unique situation:

  1. We address the stack effect or natural movement of air/radon in your home by depressurizing the soil beneath the structure to prevent radon gas from moving through the house.
  2. We drill into the concrete foundation slab, basement floor, or surrounding earth to create a suction point(s) and connect a PVC pipe.
  3. We vent gas through a pipe that runs through a fan in the attic or along the top of the home. Then, radon is expelled outside.
  4. We seal all radon entry points with a urethane caulking compound, including cracks, gaps, and openings.
  5. We perform a final system analysis to inspect the fan and other key system details to ensure it performs correctly.
  6. We perform a radon test within 30 days of the system installation to ensure the system is working.

Job Stories From McCall, ID
New Construction Mitigation System

Idaho Radon was contacted by Flynner Homes to install a mitigation system for a client's house located in McCall, ID.  This was a new construction project.  The first trip to the location was to establish the suction point and extend the future pressure field out by placing perforated pipe in the road mix before the slab was poured.  We completed the project with a second trip during the framing stage of construction to extend the pipe from the basement stub-up to the attic.  In the attic is where the fan was positioned.  During new construction, the electricians will provide an outlet for the fan.  The roofers will ensure the roof penetration is complete.

Providing a mitigation system during construction provides a better aesthetic for the homeowners because there is no pipe on the exterior of the house.  The suction point is more efficient because it extends under the entire slab.  In addition, the all-weather fans are contained in an area out of the elements.  The builder was happy for a the solution to his clients and the clients were happy the system was not external on the house.
